W. Neil HASKINS

Walter Neil HASKINS, 93, of East Rochester, NY, formerly of Wellsville, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2022.

Born May 29, 1929, in Coudersport, PA, he was the son of Irving W. and Mary Anna Snyder Haskins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of over 61 years, Helen Sylvia Gregory Haskins; two brothers, Irving Washington Haskins, Jr. and Norman Archibald Haskins; sister-in-law, Mary M. Haskins; and son-in-law, Bradley C. Mitchell. Surviving are: four children: Sue (Daniel) DeGraff, of Walworth, Betsey (Patrick) Piccioli of East Rochester, Laurie Mitchell of Dansville, and David (Sujee) Haskins of Ellicott City, MD; eight grandchildren, Emily DeGraff (Josh Baird), Thomas DeGraff, Sarah Mitchell (Tom Coombs), Scott Mitchell (Tiffany Hillier), Jordan Mitchell, Christopher Haskins, Nicholas Haskins, and Zachary Haskins; two great grandchildren, Bradley Coombs and Parker Mitchell; his brother-in-law, William F. Hassay, Sr. of Hollywood, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

A Korean War Veteran, he served honorably with the Army Signal Corps and trained in the use of microwave signal technology. He taught science in middle and high school, seventh through twelfth grades, in Towanda, PA and Wellsville, NY for over 31 years. He and his wife also worked as real estate agents. He was known for his excellent painting, carpentry, and masonry skills. Many homes in Wellsville had been painted by him during the summers. To accommodate their growing family, he built on to his home constructing a beautiful fieldstone fireplace in a new family room. He also added on several rooms and a back patio where family enjoyed many gatherings throughout the years. He and Helen also enjoyed getting together with friends and playing cards. Neil was an avid bowler and won several trophies with his teammates. He also enjoyed, fishing, hunting, and trapping.

Neil was a member of Wellsville First United Methodist Church and an associate member of Penfield United Methodist Church. Later in life, he enjoyed traveling across the country with Helen, visiting every state except Colorado and Hawaii. He enjoyed solving word searches, feeding many varieties of birds, and telling stories to his children and grandchildren. Neil was a loving father and friend to many. Family was always valued by him. With his double cousin, Gary Snyder, he started the Haskins-Snyder Family Reunion which was held in Coudersport, PA for many years. He will be missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Friends may call at Olney-Foust Funeral Homes & Cremation, Crowell Chapel, 296 North Main Street, Wellsville, NY on Friday, June 17, 2022 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM, with Funeral Services following at 6:00 PM.  Burial and committal services will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 18, 2022 in Bloomingdale Cemetery, Shickshinny, PA.
